We are presently recruiting for a Senior Associate (Japan consumer sector focused) in the Active Equities Asia department in our Hong Kong office.  Reporting to the Regional domain lead of Active Equities Asia, the incumbent will be a key contributor to scaling our portfolio, lead investment research, develop and communicate investment recommendations in our long/short strategy.

Role Specific Accountabilities:

Analyze and communicate Investment Opportunities

• Lead the research and evaluate investment opportunities in consumer sector in Japan market.
• Lead due diligence on opportunities – including financial, company and sector diligence, to determine investment merits and risks.
• Oversee the building of dynamic financial and valuation models to analyze expected returns of investment opportunities, test assumptions and perform sensitivity analysis.
• Perform valuation analysis of companies’ securities,
• Perform the relative ranking of investment opportunities to optimize exposures within the portfolio.
• Present investment recommendations to thought partners and investment committees.

Asset Management

• Analyze and communicate company earnings and events that move share prices.
• Monitor ongoing financial performance of portfolio assets. Oversee the update of financial models and other analysis tools to help with communicating rationale behind change in investment view.
• Performing valuation reviews for portfolio assets.
• Build and leverage relationships with industry participants and management teams.

Be a Contributing Team Player

• Participate in and contribute to weekly departmental meetings and investment recommendation meetings.
• Support other members on the team in research and knowledge sharing.
• Collaborate with other departments to produce impactful research work.

We are currently recruiting for an Associate/ Senior Associate for the Private Equity Asia (PEA) group with a focus on direct private equity investments. Located in our Hong Kong office and reporting to Managing Director, the Associate/ Senior Associate plays a key role in making direct investments in the Asia Pacific region. 

Role-specific Accountabilities

• Work with team to grow CPP Investments’ private equity business in Asia by contributing in investment origination, execution, asset management and team talent development
• Support investment origination by conducting industry and company research, contributing to development of potential investment themes, identifying attractive investment targets, building sector knowledge and network over-time
• Work with team and support the development of investment thesis and risks
• Lead execution of small co-investments or major work stream for large, complex investment opportunities, including working independently or leading junior team members to conduct market research, competitive analysis, management team assessment, regulatory trend study, financial performance and return analysis etc. In particular, the candidate needs to have the capability of construct financial models for various deal opportunities from minority investments to leveraged buy-out transactions
• Manage and work with 3rd party advisors, when relevant to drive due diligence insights. Work with company management/manage relations to achieve differentiated investment angles
• Contribute to investment recommendation and approval process, including drafting investment recommendations, presenting to investment committees and answering committee questions
• Support the negotiation and execution of agreements and other transaction-related legal documentation
• Contribute to PEA’s asset management efforts by monitoring on-going financial performance of portfolio companies, participating in specific value creation initiatives when appropriate, reviewing valuations of portfolio companies periodically, coordinating with other internal groups on asset management related matters
• Support the management and enhancement of relationships with key stakeholders, including investment partners, advisors and portfolio management teams etc.
• Support the monitoring and evaluation of potential exit alternatives
• Contribute to the development of junior team members by providing timely feedback and on-the-job coaching. Participate in organizational level initiatives such as Inclusion & Diversity to enhance CPP Investments culture
• Participate in and contribute to group level and department meetings

About the Role

Reoles and Responsibilities:

• Perform risk assessments on a wide range of financial risk topics such as strategic asset allocation, internal capital and solvency management, inforce management, product and reinsurance pricing.
• Provide timely and constructive feedback while working with local BU risk officers to develop risk mitigation strategies which are practical and commercially sound.
• Develop and/or review standards, guidance notes, templates and other governance “tools” to support financial risk management processes in local BU’s.
• Risk Appetite Statement & Tolerances: Primary accountability for the development, maintenance, and monitoring of the Group’s Risk Appetite Statement, principles and tolerances for the Group.
• Own Risk Solvency Assessment (“ORSA”) & Recovery Plan: Support the development of the annual ORSA and Recovery Plan for AIA Group, and identify potential business actions deriving from these analyses.
• Stress & scenario testing for capital planning purposes: Develop and apply the Group stress testing framework to monitor the Group’s solvency and financial strength both on an actual and prospective basis.
• Analyze and identify key risks of inforce portfolio, to generate value-adding insight for risk management purposes.
• Compile, review and provide expert commentary on insurance risk metrics and watchlists, working to the standard of reliability and clarity which is required for submissions to the Group Financial Risk Committee.
• Participate in financial risk-related ad-hoc projects based on senior management requests or external developments.

Minimum Job Requirements:

• Minimum 10 years’ actuarial experience in a life insurer/reinsurer
• Significant practical experience in the fields of life insurance/reinsurance capital management or product pricing or internal economic capital model
• Fellowship in a recognized international actuarial professional body
• Assertive, self-motivated and customer-orientated
• Sound problem solving and decision-making skills
• Strong leadership skills with the confidence to challenge consensus views
